CISA article published in the Malaria Journal
Zoom

A CISA researcher is the lead author of a new article published in the “Malaria Journal”, the only publication exclusively dedicated to researching malaria.

This article seeks to demonstrate how, faced by the beginnings of resistance to Chloroquine anti-malarial therapeutic treatments, Angola adopted Artemisinin based medication as its first line of usage therapy.

Currently, Angola is seeking to consolidate the control of malaria at the national level and preparing the country for the gradual elimination of the disease alongside other countries in the region. However, the capacity of Plasmodium to develop resistance to the diverse therapeutics represents a threat to these objectives.

This article correspondingly seeks to review and discuss the relatively scarce and dispersed information available on resistance to anti-malarial treatments in Angola. This review seeks not only to inform but also encourage future studies that monitor and update knowledge on the effectiveness of the treatments available and the prevalence of molecular markers of resistance to medication; core factors towards attaining the objectives necessary to eliminating malaria.
