Article Published in International Journal

The article entitled "Various pfcrt and pfmdr1 genotypes of Plasmodium falciparum co-circulate with P. malariae, P. ovale sp and P. vivax in northern Angola" was published in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. This work resulted from cooperation between researchers belonging to the CISA Project, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. The study deployed molecular biology techniques in the field in Angola in order to determine the prevalence of the different Plasmodium species, the protozoa responsible for malaria and surveyed 3,316 individuals in Bengo province. Samples were collected during the prevalence survey carried out within the CISA project framework.
Subsequently, the P. falciparum was subject to genetic study identifying the genes associated with resistance to anti-malarial treatments, with the findings of extreme importance to the choice of pharmaceutical drugs prescribed by clinics for treating malaria.
