CISA – the Health Research Centre of Angola, in partnership with iMM – the Institute of Molecular Medicine, is developing a study designed to analyse the relationship between the levels of iron in blood and the incidence of malaria in children between five and ten years of age attended by Bengo General Hospital.
The data gathered by project researchers will enable both a better overall understanding and help to resolve the question of iron supplements in populations afflicted by malaria whether in Angola or other regions of Africa in addition to providing important information on the iron utilisation mechanisms that underlie the interactions between the human host and thePlasmodium parasite that causes malaria.
