Throughout the next two years, CISA shall be implementing the project “Epidemiology of the hemoglobinopathies: genetic haemoglobin variations and erythrocyte enzymes in Bengo Province” which spans not only testing for the prevalence of the main hemoglobinopathies in infants born in the Bengo General Hospital Maternity Ward but also the training and empowerment of nurses in this field. The project began around a month ago and the blood filter paper and umbilical cord sample collection rate among natural births in the ward stands at around 72%. Around a third of this newly born population report some alteration in their hemoglobin structure, hence, quarterly follow-up appointments over the next two years will provide support to families throughout this testing process.
